Smith writes, &#8220;<em>Lyric Sexology Vol. 1<\/em> makes a perfect mess of so much human experience that&#8217;s been too tidily categorized. It&#8217;s a finger flip to established notions of how a man or woman comes to be. Not dismissive, but irreverent. Not binary, but a new bi. Bi-everything. Buy into nothing, except your self in this moment. The poetry pours into a chilled glass, a long tall drink of all that&#8217;s gendered and sacred, sets the mixture on fire, and proffers us a big gulp. With this concoction, <em>Lyric Sexology<\/em> will unmake us, so we might begin again.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe new version of Salah&#8217;s second collection of poetry, originally published in the US by Roof Books in 2014, features four additional poems, including &#8220;Tiresias as Cuir (on the run),&#8221; which first appeared in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vetchpoetry.org\/issues\/issue2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vetch: A Magazine of Trans Poetry and Poetics<\/a><\/em> in spring 2016.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Tiresias as Cuir (on the run)<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\ni.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nDog. The time you take home, the time you take away from home.<br \/>\nThe insistence, the instance worried at with your thick tongue.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nStink. Because of what you found on the ground and put in your gut.<br \/>\nHarry. As in beset, or beast. To beast on their terms, their territory.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nGut knotted, pulled and twined to an internal clock.<br \/>\nDrape over the occasion, sleep on the mat at the metre\u2019s foot.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nii.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nCuir poetics or not, monolingual, but your poets are. Cure misery<br \/>\nnot confined to the nation-state, but spread by road trip, hash, tragic opera.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIdle vials can be convincingly propped to suit the man you want<br \/>\nto be, or issue forward \u201cthe food that always remains\u201d esteemed.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nCuir milieu you want to tableau. An apology for discovery, accident.<br \/>\nScales already weighted, reviews in stone long buried time.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMainstreaming \u201clong buried time\u201d sleeps draped in prophesy.<br \/>\nRoot as per root. Ocean as per root. Sleep as per root.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\niii.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nOn the couch. At the urinal. A woman, a race with a use value<br \/>\nFor the revolution. For the dead. For women like me.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen the ocean is rooted, one criticizes, less guilty<br \/>\nParting documentaries as love letters, cursive, sans serif.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWithout documents, cur poetics root for, if not abstinence<br \/>\nThen the mainstreaming of prophesy and the dispute of Tiresias.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPart ocean, part dog, and nine parts of the nation state<br \/>\nA wight kills for pleasure and gold and land and slaves.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nTiresias was a wight and not a wight, queer speech<br \/>\ntrafficking like vector surveillance, vile night unending.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\niv.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe simplest equations are subtraction.<br \/>\nA \u201cdog never loses its savour.\u201d Arab slavers.<br \/>\nFawn smear from the mouth, eye sockets<br \/>\nTell me about your history, the one to come.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nv.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWho invents virtues? Riddles? The 2013 edition of <i>Wanting in Arabic<\/i> won the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction. At the University of Winnipeg she organized the conferences Writing Trans Genres: Emergent Literatures and Criticism and Decolonizing and Decriminalizing Trans Genres.
