The Montreal Review of Books<\/em><\/a> launches its Summer 2023\u00a0issue\u00a0Wednesday, July\u00a05th, at Wills Bar<\/strong>\u00a0(6729 Esplanade Ave).\u00a0Join us for readings by Val\u00e9rie Bah <\/strong>with translator\u00a0Kama La Mackerel<\/strong>\u00a0(The Rage Letters<\/em><\/a>, Metonomy),\u00a0Maxime Aur\u00e9lien <\/strong>et Ted Rutland<\/strong>\u00a0(Out To Defend Ourselves<\/em><\/a>, Fernwood), and John Reibetanz<\/strong>\u00a0(New Songs for Orpheus<\/em><\/a>, McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press).<\/p>\n

Doors open at 6:00\u00a0p.m<\/strong>., with readings beginning at 7:00 pm<\/strong>. The authors will be available to sign books after the readings. Admission is free; please RSVP on the Facebook event<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For those unable to attend in person, readings will be live-streamed on our YouTube<\/a> page.<\/p>\n

Empreints de r\u00e9alisme magique, les r\u00e9cits de Val s\u2019inspirent de la pens\u00e9e f\u00e9ministe noire et de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience v\u00e9cue.<\/p>\n

Kama La Mackerel <\/strong>est un\u00b7e \u00e9ducataire, artiste, performaire, \u00e9crivain\u00b7e et traductaire dont la pratique existe \u00e0 l\u2019intersection de l\u2019anglais, du fran\u00e7ais et du kreol morisien. Iel est l\u2019autaire du recueil de po\u00e9sie de Kama La Mackerel est disponible \u00e0 Maurice par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire de<\/em> (Metonymy Press) and have translated works by Canadian writers Vivek Shraya and Kai Cheng Thom. They have lectured, performed and exhibited their work internationally.<\/p>\n

Maxime Aur\u00e9lien <\/strong>is the former leader of les B\u00e9langers, Montreal\u2019s first Haitian street gang. He is the owner of Cash Content, a pawn shop and barbershop in Montreal\u2019s east end.<\/p>\n

Ted Rutland <\/strong>is a professor at Concordia University. His research and activism focuses on the racial politics of urban planning and policing in Canadian cities. He is the author of Displacing Blackness: Planning, Power, and Race in Twentieth-Century Halifax<\/em>.<\/p>\n

John Reibetanz<\/strong>\u00a0is an award-winning poet, fellow of Victoria College, and senior fellow at Massey College, Toronto. He has published fourteen full collections and two chapbooks, been shortlisted for the national ReLit Poetry Award, and won First Prize in the international Petra Kenney Poetry Competition.<\/p>\n
