Kai Cheng Thom is a writer, performance artist and social worker who loves lipstick and superhero cartoons. A prolific essayist and poet, her work appears online in publications including BuzzFeed, xoJane, Everyday Feminism, and Autostraddle; and in print in Asian American Literary Review, Plenitude, and Matrix Magazine, among others. Her first collection of poetry, a place called No Homeland, will be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in Spring 2017.
Thom is also the author of Metonymy Press’s forthcoming novel Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir, a playful, yet piercing, surrealist dance through queer coming of age that shatters expectations and pieces them back together into a razor-sharp mosaic. The book is scheduled for release in early November of this year.
Over the next couple of months, we’ll be sharing clips from an interview with the author, where she discusses everything from the sticky business of self-publishing to how she hopes to challenge the traditional transgender memoir genre. In this first instalment, Thom explains her inspiration for writing Fierce Femmes, a story that she says honours and pokes fun at every queer anarchist fuck-the-system fantasy while also speaking true to the hungry heart of all runaways who long for home.
