From mermaids to girl gangs: Kai Cheng Thom tells us more about her upcoming first novel

Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir is scheduled for release in November 2016. In this second instalment of our ongoing interview series with the author, Kai Cheng Thom tells us more about the story, a couple of her favourite characters, and where she sees the book fitting into the broader context of trans publishing:

“It’s a novel about a runaway trans girl of colour who is searching for herself. And in that search for herself, she finds fist fights, sisterhood, a vigilante gang, an evil doctor, a witch, the Goddess of War, and a whole cast of other characters who she learns how to love, how to hurt, how to forgive, and how to love again.”

“I like to think of the book as a satirical—but also very heartfelt—commentary on and homage to where trans lit has been, in terms of the memoir and autobiography, and where it’s going, in terms of leaping into every other possible genre and narrative trope.”
