“What was beyond doubt by the time I got back was that a new Transfixion had arrived in the form of Hermia Druitt, the woman in this photograph. This was confirmed by the sensations: flashes from Arcadia. Moonlight, of a kind, sighed up and down the tube of my spine, but above all, that indescribable note which accompanied all my Transfixions was present: humming beneath the high fine rush—probably not dissimilar to holy rapture—was an almost violent familiarity. The feeling of not only recognising, but of having been recognised.

A new Transfixion.”

Shola von Reinhold’s lavish debut novel lays bare, through ornate, layered prose, the gaps and faultlines in the archive. Through obsessive research on an overlooked Black modernist poet, the narrator buckles under the vacuousness of the art world and also curates a queer historical scene, breaking it open and reveling in it. The novel was originally published in the UK by Jacaranda Books Art Music Ltd. as part of the Twenty in 2020 Black British writers series.

Shola von Reinhold is a writer based in Glasgow, Scotland.

LOTE delights in satirizing contemporary arts culture and carving out a Black, queer perspective. Witty, gorgeous, and at times Gothic, it questions the lines between fantasy and obsession—and the boundaries of escapism.”
—Rebecca Peng, NUVO

“The novel is underpinned by a question: Why are so few queer Black British modernists documented in those flourishing interwar years? Through an impressive mix of scholarship and historical fiction, Reinhold sets out to unravel and challenge this history, prying open the ledgers to ask how and why the received archive is so overwhelmingly white.”
—Izabella Scott, The White Review

LOTE is a magical, revolutionary piece of writing.”
—Skye Arundhati Thomas, Frieze

“Though von Reinhold fictionalizes history, the book begs the question: who has yet to be unearthed? What is the real meaning of a canon, if there are so many hidden ones? Readers will find real joy in von Reinhold’s creation of what reads as a joyous Black artistic queer community.”
—Sruti Islam, Montreal Review of Books

“Shola von Reinhold’s debut novel, LOTE, takes the reader on a fabulously queer, decadent, decolonial, and complex journey…”
—Isabelle Coy-Dibley, The Modernist Review

“What does it mean to daydream about a past that would not be hospitable to you? Shola von Reinhold’s debut novel, LOTE, dramatizes this question by bringing complex literary-ethical crises and frothy champagne into the archive.”
—Ana Quiring, Full Stop
