Spring 2015

She Is Sitting in the Night is a contemporary queer re-visioning of a beautiful feminist tarot deck from the 80s that documents a conversation across generations and mediums. It is simultaneously a tool for tarot reading and a celebration of queer and feminist cultural production, past and present.

Also available from Apple Books and as a PDF.

Ruth West took four years to create the first edition of Thea’s Tarot (1984), using the medium of papercut. Each image was then shot with a camera, photocopied in black and white, and printed. The artist described her work as “a women’s vision of the tarot deck … a personal interpretation of traditional tarot themes of human spiritual history.” Thea’s Tarot was inspired by Billie Potts’s A New Women’s Tarot.

In 2014, then-Montrealer Rima Athar discovered Thea’s Tarot and loved it. She requested that her friend Oliver Pickle write a book about it. Metonymy Press published She Is Sitting in the Night in 2015, and since then, we have been periodically distributing Ruth’s original printing Thea’s Tarot decks alongside it.

Metonymy Press has been granted permission by Ruth to reprint a limited edition of Thea’s Tarot.

The new edition is very much like the original, and comes with the same instructional pamphlet, now reformatted to fit on extra cards. The 78-card deck has Ruth’s signature design on the back of each card, and the images are black and white reproductions of Ruth’s original papercut prints.

The cards can be purchased on their own or together with She Is Sitting in the Night.

It is simultaneously a tool for tarot reading and a celebration of queer and feminist cultural production, past and present.

Alongside Oliver Pickle’s acclaimed contemporary interpretation of Ruth West’s lesbian-feminist tarot cards, we now carry a new printing of Thea’s Tarot (originally released in 1984 by the artist). Order them alongside the book or on their own.
